Is Repairing Your Washing Machine Worth It?

Washing machine repairs vs Washing machine replacements

In today’s climate deciding if a washing machine repair is cost effective is harder than ever! You have to consider the age, energy efficiency, the average lifespan of the brand, what the fault could be and potential savings from a new model.

When is it worth repairing a washing machine?

  • The cost of repair is a small fraction of a new model’s price and the problem is not structural.
  • The washing machine is otherwise reliable, in good condition, and meets your needs.
  • The repair improves efficiency, and/or prevents further problems that could increase costs later.
  • There is still warranty coverage on parts and/or labour.
  • A trusted engineer provides a clear and informed diagnosis.
  • You want to keep the machine for several more years and a replacement would not offer long-term savings.

When is it better to buy new?

  • The repair approaches or exceeds 60% of the price of a new model.
  • The appliance has recurring faults even after multiple repairs.
  • Your current machine lacks features you want, such as better spin speeds, larger capacities, or smart home functions.
  • The repair would only be a temporary fix and not a long term solution.

What is the average life span of a washing machine?

  • A well-maintained washing machine will generally last about 10–15 years depending on the brand, usage, and service history.
  • Under the right to repair regulations manufacturers must have essential and functional spare parts available for a minimum of 7-10 years. Even when discontinued, suppliers may still stock those parts or alternative parts may be available, further prolonging the lifespan of appliances.
  • Keeping up with regular maintenance, such as cleaning filters, not overloading the drum, and fixing minor faults quickly, also helps to maximise the lifespan.

How much does it cost to repair a washing machine?

  • Minor repairs (e.g., replacing a belt, a hose, or a door seal) typically range from £15.00 to £70, excluding labour and depending on the brand.
  • Major repairs (e.g., replacing a motor or control/power board) can be between £100 and £300, depending on the exact part.
  • Labour charges vary by location and the engineers experience, some companies charge a call out fee plus hourly rates, Glotech Repairs work on a fixed labour charge quoted upfront so you can make an informed decision.

Factors to weigh before deciding

  • If the washing machine is nearing the end of its average lifespan, replacing may be more economical.
  • Cost of repair relative to replacement: A common rule of thumb is to consider repairing if a new washing machine would cost more than double the repair quote.
  • Recurring problems suggest underlying issues that may occur again after another repair.
  • You have a trusted engineer that will complete an in depth diagnosis.
  • Repairing decreases waste and resource use, aligning with sustainable practices.

How to decide without sacrificing confidence

  1. Get a quote for parts and labour (if parts can be identified with the information available)
  2. Compare the quote to the cost of a new machine (including installation and removal of the old machine which ranges from £50-£200).
  3. Check the energy ratings for both options (A meaning uses the least amount of electricity and water, G being the least efficient).
  4. Consider how many years you expect from your repaired washing machine versus a new one.

How my machine earned another three years and counting

A few years ago, I was facing the same dilemma when my washing machines spin cycle was much noisier (so noisy it would walk itself across the kitchen). As my washing machine was only 4 years old I bit the bullet and arranged for an engineer to take a look. After 15 minutes he advised me the shock absorbers were faulty . He had an alternative set available and offered to order the manufacturers part and come back.

I obviously chose to have the washing machine repair completed there and then! The total cost was roughly £125.00.

My washing machine has since endured three more years and counting!

Final thoughts

Deciding whether to repair or replace hinges on cost, age, and the potential for meaningful efficiency gains.

A minor, affordable repair can meaningfully extend the machines lifespan, as I personally experienced. On the other hand, when repairs become more frequent or expensive, a replacement washing machine may prove more economical.
